Refuge to host outdoor workshop for teachers, community leaders

ALTON — Project Learning Tree, in collaboration with Hirundo Wildlife Refuge, will offer a one-day workshop for area teachers and community leaders 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18.

Prekindergarten to eighth-grade teachers, formal and nonformal educators, college students and after-school program leaders will experience activities that bring the PLT interdisciplinary curriculum outdoors.

Participants will receive the nationally recognized PLT PreK-8 Activity Guide that includes 96 classroom ready activities. Learn how to explore and compare various habitats with a naturalist, an experienced teacher and the Maine PLT coordinator.

The outdoor and hands-on field investigations session provides opportunities for learning how to use the outdoors as a means to teach all content areas with links to current state and national standards.

The cost of the workshop is $35 educators, $25 students. Participants will receive the guide, a certificate of attendance and handouts related to all activities.

Coffee and morning snacks will be provided. Bring a lunch and dress for the outdoors for the better part of the day. Registration is required no later than Saturday, May 11.
