Early morning fire destroys Winterport garage that housed carpeting business

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

WINTERPORT, Maine — A garage that housed an independent carpeting and flooring business on Souder Station Lane was destroyed by fire on Wednesday morning.

Winterport Fire Chief Thomas Doe said crews were called to the scene at 5:30 a.m. When they arrived, the garage was fully engulfed in flames.

“I have a firefighter who lives ¾ of a mile away, and when he got there it was totally involved,” said Doe. “He said that he was about half-done putting his gear on when the roof fell.”

A quick response by firefighters likely prevented the blaze from spreading to the nearby house, which wasn’t attached to the garage, Doe said. The fire was under control in about an hour and a half. Nobody was injured in the blaze.

Crews from Hampden, Winterport and Frankfort Village responded to the fire, Doe said. The homeowner had insurance on his property.

A cause and origin of the fire will likely be undetermined, the fire chief said.
