FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — A 42-year-old local man died on Monday evening after the car he was a passenger in struck a tree.
Sherilyn Bennett, 49, of Fort Fairfield was driving north at about 10:45 p.m. on North Caribou Road when she lost control of her 1998 Chrysler Concorde, according to Fort Fairfield Police Chief William Campbell.
The vehicle spun out of control and hit a tree, Campbell said in a statement Tuesday morning. Bennett’s passenger, Larry A. Sawyer of Fort Fairfield, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, Campbell reported.
Bennett was transported by Crown Ambulance to Cary Medical Center in Caribou where she was treated for minor injuries, according to the police chief.
Campbell said police have not yet determined a cause for the crash.
Fort Fairfield police Sgt. Shawn Newell is leading the investigation and Maine State Police Trooper Rob Flynn is reconstructing the crash. Members of the Maine State Police, Maine Warden Service and the Fort Fairfield Fire Department assisted at the scene.
