PASSADUMKEAG – Roland Austin Hobbs, 88, passed away peacefully April 28, 2013, at Maine Veterans Home, Augusta. He was born Oct. 21, 1924, in Carroll, the son of Lottie (Smith) Hobbs and Roland E. Hobbs.
Roland grew up in Lincoln and at the age of 17, enlisted in the Marine Corps and was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II, and was a Purple Heart recipient. He married Julia Annie Reardon of Woodville, Feb. 25, 1945, and they were together for 67 years. Roland owned and operated a dairy farm and worked as a woodsman during his earlier years in West Corinth. In later years, he moved to Passadumkeag, where he owned and operated a pulp truck until his retirement at the age of 72.
Roland is survived by his three daughters and their spouses, Jewel and Danny Keenan of Keystone Heights, Fla., Rolanda and William Leary of Casco and Naomi and Wilbur Shardlow of West Gardiner; seven grandchildren, Garrett Keenan, Tara Boyles, Victoria Quattlebaum, Michelle Leary, Jeffery Leary, Nicole Willey and Tyson Shardlow; and 14 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, and the Maine Veterans Homes in Bangor and Augusta, for their love and care of Roland.
Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. A graveside service, with full military honors, will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, at East Millinocket Cemetery, with the Rev Roy Richardson officiating.
