Two sent to hospital in Cornville collision

CORNVILLE, Maine — Driver inattention is being blamed for a collision that sent two men to the hospital Thursday afternoon, police said.

Marc Swain, 18, of Norridgewock was traveling along Molunkus Road when he lost control of his Jeep and was struck by a pickup truck driven by William Chappo, 64, of Cornville, Lt. Carl Gottardi of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office said.

Chappo was driving on Shadagee Road, and the vehicles collided at the intersection of Shadagee and Molunkus roads, the lieutenant said.

The impact forced the pickup into a telephone pole and the Jeep to roll over onto its roof, according to Gottardi.

Police believe Swain was talking on his cellphone at the time of the crash and alcohol could be a factor as well, according to Gottardi. The district attorney’s office will review the crash and determine whether Swain will be charged.

Both drivers were taken to Redington-Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan, and their conditions were unknown Friday, Gottardi said. Both vehicles were demolished in the crash.
