Hikers focused on exploring the peaks of Acadia National Park and and Baxter State Park might overlook the spring hiking opportunities looming along the Penobscot Valley eastern and southern horizon.
The Dedham Hills straddle the Hancock-Penobscot county border and include several peaks accessible to hikers and the occasional mountain biker.
Among these peaks is Bald Mountain, topped by spruce and fir and nine communications towers. I usually kick off a hiking season by stretching my legs on Bald Mountain, accesssed from the Bald Mountain Road in Dedham.
Clear blue skies called me up the granite-floored trail on Wednesday, April 17. Despite the cold wind blustering across the summit, I lingered a while on Sunset Ledge to enjoy the views north to snow-covered Mount Katahdin and west to the Bigelows.
The scenery was magnificent.
