Portland fire crew responds to two-alarm call in Old Port

By Troy R. Bennett, BDN Staff

PORTLAND, Maine — City firefighters responded to a two-alarm call Monday morning at 86 Exchange St. in the Old Port after employees at Swiss Time reported smelling smoke and hearing fire inside the walls.

The blaze was extinguished within an hour of when crews responded around 9:45 a.m.

City spokeswoman Nicole Clegg said the building dates from 1900 and fire officials believe the fire started inside a basement wall. She said fire investigators were on the scene and no damage estimate had been made.

“We also had a small fire going on at the recycling center,” said Portland Fire Chief Jerome LaMoria at the Exchange Street scene. “It was cleared just prior to this call coming in.”

LaMoria said no one was hurt in either incident.

“Everybody’s fine, no injuries,” said LaMoria.
