Man charged with OUI after striking vehicle in Bangor nightclub parking lot

BANGOR, Maine — A local man was charged with operating under the influence early Saturday when he backed his pickup truck into a car in a nightclub parking lot, police said.

Bangor police Officer Derek Laflin was on duty at Half Acre on Harlow Street when he heard a loud crash around 1:20 a.m., according to Sgt. Paul Edwards.

A pickup driven by Thomas Sapiel, 21, had apparently backed into a car when Sapiel was attempting to leave the nightclub, according to Edwards.

Laflin went to investigate and suspected that Sapiel was intoxicated. He was brought to the Bangor police station for a breathalyzer test.

When it was discovered Sapiel was over the legal limit of 0.08, he was summoned for OUI but not arrested, the sergeant said.

According to court archives printed in the Bangor Daily News, Sapiel was arrested in 2009 after a state trooper clocked him going 116 mph in a 55 mph zone on Interstate 95.
