LEWISTON, Maine — Two police officers were injured and a local man was arrested Friday afternoon in an altercation on Bartlett Street.
It happened at about 4 p.m., police said, when they went to serve a protection-from-abuse order against Nicholas Begin, 26, of 222 Bartlett St.
Begin took off running, police said, and officers gave chase. As they attempted to subdue the suspect, several other officers rushed to the scene. Begin was caught in an area next to the Italian Bakery, near his home, but the arrest wasn’t an easy one.
Witnesses said Begin went down to the ground along with several officers. Others said it appeared Begin made a grab for one of the officer’s guns as they scuffled.
When Begin was handcuffed and led back to the street, his face was bloody. He screamed at a woman who stood on the sidewalk, watching the fray.
“Are you happy?” he demanded.
Police Officer Matt Vierling suffered an undisclosed injury during the melee, officials said. He was taken away by ambulance, although his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Another officer was injured, but his name was not available late Friday.
Begin was charged with assault on an officer, refusing to submit to arrest and violating a protection-from-abuse order. He was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn where he remained Friday night.
The matter remained under investigation.
