ST. ALBANS, Maine — A local man was killed early Friday morning after the car he was driving struck a tree, according to police.

Austin E. Day, 18, of St. Albans died at the scene on Mountain Road near the intersection with Pond Road, said Somerset County Sheriff’s Office Detective Lt. Carl Gottardi II. The crash occurred at 2:03 a.m. Friday.

Gottardi said Day’s 2009 black Honda Accord was traveling south when it left the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. A passerby came upon the vehicle and called 911 and attempted CPR, as did ambulance personnel that arrived on scene.

Day’s dog, the only other occupant in the vehicle, died while being transported to the veterinarian clinic, said Gottardi.

“Speed and possibly alcohol appear to be factors in this accident, which is still under investigation,” said Gottardi.

Deputy Joseph Jackson investigated the crash and he was assisted by Deputy Cpl. Michael Ross, St. Albans Fire Department, St. Albans Animal Control and Sebasticook Valley Hospital and EMS Ambulance Services.
