LEWISTON, Maine — The body of a local transient who was killed earlier this week has been found, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Friday evening.

Michael McNaughton, 23, was arrested and charged with murder Friday morning at the Lewiston Police Department, McCausland said in a news release.

McNaughton is accused of killing 20-year-old Romeo Parent, a transient who lived in the Lewiston-Auburn area, McCausland said. Parent’s body was found in Jug Stream, just below the dam that separates Annabessacook and Cobbossee lakes in Monmouth.

“Detectives think Parent was killed in Greene late Tuesday afternoon and his body was dumped into the stream in Monmouth, along Route 135, on Wednesday,” McCausland said in a second news release Friday evening.

Member’s of the Maine State Police dive team recovered the body after it was located Friday afternoon by the department’s tracking dogs in less than 10 feet of water.

McNaughton and Parent were friends, according to McCausland.

Law enforcement officials from Maine State Police, the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Maine Warden Service, in addition to Lewiston and Auburn police, searched for the body throughout the day Friday, McCausland said.

McNaughton is being held without bail at the Androscoggin County Jail. His first court appearance is set for Tuesday, April 16.

Correction: An earlier version of this story requires correction. Michael McNaughton is accused of killing Romeo Parent, not Romero Parent.
