ORRINGTON, Maine — Fire Chief Mike Spencer confirmed Monday he is in the middle of a two-week suspension without pay, and neither he or Town Manager Paul White would discuss the reason.

“I have no comment,” White said, referring to it as a personnel issue.

White suspended Spencer on Tuesday, March 26, said Spencer, who was elected fire chief in 2004. The next year, Spencer combined the town’s volunteer fire and rescue departments into one municipal department and was appointed chief.

Spencer said he could not talk about the reason he was suspended and when asked if he was provided with a written explanation, said he could not comment on the matter.

Selectman James Goody, reached Monday by phone while working in New Hampshire, referred all questions about the suspension to Chairman Kevin Allcroft.

“It’s just an ugly deal,” is the only comment Goody made.

Allcroft did not immediately return messages left for comment.
