Merrill K. Smith

BAR HARBOR – Merrill K. Smith, 93, a lifetime resident of Hancock County, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2013, in Bar Harbor. Merrill was born Dec. 2, 1919, in Bar Harbor to Clarence and Mona (Goss) Smith.

He grew up in Bar Harbor and graduated from Bar Harbor High School. During World War II Merrill served as a flight mechanic in the U.S. Army Air Corp. During his service he was stationed in Newark, N.J., and India. After the war, he settled in Seal Harbor with his wife Meredith (Coston) Smith. The family moved to Bar Harbor where Merrill owned and operated Merrill’s Service Station. Following his career in auto mechanics, he worked for Blue Nose ferry service for 35 years and retired as the dock foreman. During his retirement, he enjoyed keeping busy mowing lawns for neighbors and at the cemetery. Merrill will be remembered by his family and friends as a very hardworking and social man.

He is survived by his son, Ty Smith and wife, Brenda, of Mount Desert; daughters, Jackie Bowden and husband, Tom, of Bar Harbor, Mary Clark and husband, Michael, of Bar Harbor, Jan Merchant and husband, George, of Mount Desert and Jean Welch and husband, Brian, of Carmel; brother, Kenneth Smith of Bar Harbor; grandchildren, Dave and Melanie Bowden, Julie and Robert Hall, Elizabeth and David Murray, Michael C. Clark, Daniel and Robyn Clark, Travis and Andrea Smith, McKenzie and Tadd Jewett and Melissa and Wes Hamel; great-grandchildren, Spencer and Stetson Bowden, Brittany and Andy Tyner, Jonathan and Nolan Hall, Morgan and Michaela Murray, Seth Clark, Emily and Andrew Clark, Greyson and Piper Smith, Riley Clough, Andrew, Abbey and Erin Jewett and Mazie Hamel; great-great-grandchild, Shane Bowden; and special lunch partner Jodi Jordan. Merrill was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Meredith Smith; brothers, Caddie Smith and Donald Smith; sisters, Elizabeth Johnson and Helen Longton; great-grandson, Paxton Hamel; and great-granddaughter, Haley Clark.

The celebration of Merrill’s life will be later in the spring. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes, Ellsworth.
