Belfast police seek jewel thieves

By Stephen Betts, BDN Staff

BELFAST, Maine — Belfast police are investigating a nighttime break-in at a jewelry store.

According to a news release from Belfast police Detective Bryan Cunningham, three people wearing hoods with their faces covered approached the front door of Belfast Jewelry in Reny’s Plaza at 12:05 a.m. Thursday. One of the people shot the front door with some type of handgun, shattering the glass.

The actions of the three were captured by a surveillance camera.

The remaining glass was knocked out with a hammer and then the trio went into the store and smashed glass-top display cases. The three grabbed assorted pieces of jewelry and put them into a bag that one of them was carrying.

The alarm was sounding and one of the subjects told the others they needed to go.

The surveillance video is being reviewed and evidence for DNA testing was gathered at the scene, Cunningham said.
