BAR HARBOR – Robert Lawrence Gilfillan, 85, died March 25, 2013, at a Bar Harbor hospital. He was born May 19, 1927, in Bar Harbor, a son of James Walls and Edith Leona (Nutting) Gilfillan.
Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December 1945, and served as a pharmacy mate. Upon his return home, he went to the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, graduating in 1951. After graduation he came home to work at the family’s pharmacy, West End Drug Company, founded by his father in 1917. He then met Barbara J. Blanchard and they were married in 1955. Bob and Barbara had four children, Bonnie, Michael, Karen and Sandy. The family enjoyed boating every weekend on the “Sea Dog” along with their two Newfoundlands and winter skiing at Sugarloaf. Bob loved people and spent 56 years serving the community at the family store. He will be missed by his lifelong friends, Dick Libby and Joe Kirk, with whom he spent many mischievous adventures. Bob became a director at Bar Harbor Bank and Trust in 1958, retiring in 2002, having served as chairman from 1994-1999. He served with the Bar Harbor Police Reserve for many years. A 50 year member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Bob, along with his friend, Larry Closson, started the navigation safety course taught at Mount Desert Island High School. 2004 marked his 50 years of practicing with Maine State Pharmacy, one of five registered pharmacists in the state at the time.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Bar Harbor; children, Bonnie L. Gilfillan, J. Michael Gilfillan and wife, Stacey, all of Bar Harbor, Karen Gilfillan-Eno and husband, Jonathan, of Hulls Cove, and Sandra Gilfillan of Mount Desert; seven grandchildren, James R. Collier, Lesley A. Collier, Andrew R. Gilfillan and wife, Sarah, Danielle L. Gilfillan, Alexander R. Gilfillan, Jocelyn Brown and Caroline Brown. He was predeceased by a brother, Lewis S. Gilfillan.
Calling hours will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, March 28 at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, where a funeral service will also be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 29. Interment will be at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor, at a later date.
