Police say Lincoln man robbed store ‘to get our attention’

LINCOLN, Maine — Police charged a Lincoln man early Sunday with robbing a Fleming Street convenience store two hours after they gave him a summons for allegedly stealing beer from it.

MacKenzie Sibley, 27, was charged with Class B robbery at about 4 a.m. Sunday. He was being held on Tuesday at Penobscot County Jail in Bangor on a $2,000 cash bail. He is due in court at the Penobscot Judicial Center on May 13, a jail officer said.

Sibley was arrested after a clerk reported that Sibley came into the Big Apple convenience store at about 2:40 a.m. Sunday and robbed it, Lincoln police Sgt. Glenn Graef said.

According to Graef, Sibley entered the store and told the clerk, “Give me all the money out of the register.”

“I know you,” the clerk responded. “Are you really doing this?”

“Give me the money or I am going to shoot you in the head,” Sibley allegedly responded.

The clerk complied and Sibley ran from the store. Within several seconds of his exit, Officer Brandi Alton said she saw Sibley running through the parking lot of a nearby auto dealership on Main Street, Graef said.

Alton was exiting the Public Safety Building on Adams Street less than a block from the Big Apple. She recognized Sibley because she had issued him the summons about two hours before, Graef said.

“She knows exactly who he is,” Graef said.

Alton, Officer John Walsh and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy David Duplisea unsuccessfully searched the downtown area for Sibley, who surprised them by turning himself in to police at the Public Safety Building at about 4 a.m., Graef said.

Investigators did not find a weapon on Sibley and suspect he never had one, Graef said. Alton read Sibley his Miranda rights before she asked him why he turned himself in and got a surprising answer, Graef said.

“He said he wanted to get our attention,” Graef said.
