Eliot man charged with having sexual contact with child under 14

By Christina Higginbotham, Foster's Daily Democrat

ELIOT, Maine — A 31-year-old man faces charges he had sexual contact with a juvenile.

Shawn M. Putnam, 31, of 916 Goodwin Road has been arrested on a warrant for the charge of having unlawful sexual contact with a minor under the age of 14.

Eliot police arrested Putnam on Saturday on the Class C felony, after being made aware of the situation by a parent of the victim.

The relations between Putnam and the child occurred through “electronic communications,” which is how the parent found out, according to Police Chief Theodor Short.

The parent of the child said this relationship has been going on since February, Short said.

Short confirmed the sexual contact was committed in Eliot, and that Putnam and the alleged victim met through a mutual acquaintance.

Police obtained a search warrant and seized a laptop in Putnam’s residence. The case remains under investigation and Short said there is a possibility for more charges.

Putnam is due in York County Superior Court on April 14.
