Diamond cat food recall affects Maine product

Bangor Daily News

Diamond Pet Foods has issued a recall of certain blends of cat food, affecting consumers in 26 states, according to a release from the U.S Food and Drug Administration.

The pet food company issued the recall because certain blends had low amounts of vitamin B12, a nutrient important to neurological function in cats.

The only affected blend distributed to Maine is 4health All Life Stages Cat Formula, in 5-pound and 18-pound bags, with a best-by date between Aug. 14 and Aug. 18, 2013.

Early signs of vitamin B12 deficiency in cats are decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss, according to the release.

“In advanced cases, neurological signs can develop, which may include ventriflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, falling, circling and seizures,” the release said.

No illnesses have yet been reported in connection with the recall, the company has said.
