Concert pianist Jonathan Biss will perform at the University of Maine on Sunday, March 10, 2013.

ORONO, Maine — American pianist Jonathan Biss returns this season for his third appearance at the University of Maine at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at Minsky Recital Hall. Last year, Biss agreed to select the recital hall’s new piano from the Steinway collection in New York City. His recital on March 10 will be performed on the piano he chose.

Biss, whose uncle lives in Machias, is widely regarded for his artistry, musical intelligence and deeply felt interpretations, winning international recognition for his orchestral, recital, and chamber music performances and for his award-winning recordings.

Biss used a different path into the concert-artist world, following his famous violinist and violist parents into chamber music, studying piano at Indiana University and eventually at The Curtis Institute where is now on faculty.

He performs a diverse repertoire, ranging from Mozart and Beethoven, through the Romantics to Janacek and Schoenberg as well as works by contemporary composers such as Gyorgy Kurtag and including commissions from Leon Kirchner, Lewis Spratlan and Bernard Rands.

Sunday’s program will include Schumann’s “Fantasiestucke, Op. 12,” and “Davidsbundlertanze, Op. 6,” and Mozart’s “Minuet in D Major, K. 355” and “Adagio in B minor, K. 540.”
