Bazdanes pitches UMaine past St. Louis after Saturday split

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — A.J. Bazdanes pitched 6⅓ innings of four-hit ball Sunday and the University of Maine scored all of its runs in the sixth inning to earn a 6-1 baseball victory over St. Louis University.

On Saturday, the Black Bears (6-6) dropped a 1-0 decision to Western Michigan before responding with a 9-5 win over Chicago State.

In Sunday’s game, Bazdanes (2-1) surrendered a first-inning run, then shut down the Billikens. The senior righthander struck out five before giving way to freshman Burk FitzPatrick, who pitched 2⅔ innings of hitless relief.

UMaine rallied in the sixth against St. Louis starter James Norwood (0-2). Alex Calbick walked and scored on Brian Doran’s double. After a wild pitch and walk to Eric White of Brewer, Mike Connolly hit an RBI single.

Troy Black reached on a fielder’s choice, then Sam Balzano of Portland stroked an RBI single and Colin Gay delivered a two-run double.

Gay also singled for UMaine.

In Saturday’s second game, the Bears scored a run in the seventh and three in the eighth to rally past Chicago State (0-7).

Mike Fransoso led UMaine with a triple, a double, two singles and four RBIs. Scott Heath of Westbrook homered and singled with two RBIs and Balzano singled twice for the Bears.

Charlie Butler pitched three innings of three-hit ball in relief of starter Logan Fullmer, before D.J. Voisine (1-0) logged 2 ⅓ innings, giving up one hit and striking out three. Luke Morrill of South Thomaston worked a scoreless ninth.

Mattingly Romanin led Chicago State with a triple, two doubles and an RBI. Nathan Poff tripled and singled with two RBIs. Starter Dylan Sterrett (0-3) took the loss.

Heath broke a 5-5 tie with his home run in the seventh, then Fransoso hit a run-scoring single and Alex Calbick had a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

In Saturday’s first game, Mike Moyer and Gabe Berman combined on a three-hit shutout Saturday, carrying Western Michigan to victory.

Moyer scattered three hits over the first 7⅓ innings striking out three and walking two, before Berman worked 1⅔ scoreless innings with no hits to secure the shutout.

Junior righthander Tommy Lawrence (1-1) took the loss for the Bears. He spread out eight hits and allowed the game’s only run in his six innings of work. He fanned five, walked one and hit a batter.

Shaun Coughlin pitched two innings of two-hit ball in relief for UMaine.

Western Michigan (2-9) scored the only run in the second inning. Brandon Cable led off with a single to right-center and Steve Buglione walked. One out later, Hunter Prince doubled down the right-field line to plate the run.

Balzano, Fransoso and Heath singled for the Bears.

Cable and Buglione also added a single each amidst 10 for the Broncos.
