PORTLAND—The streak, or should I say, streaks, live on.
Friday evening, the two-time defending Class A state girls’ basketball champion McAuley Lions extended their win streak to 46 games and punched their ticket to the regional final with a closer-than-many-anticipated 47-38 win over Scarborough in the semifinal round.
Top-ranked McAuley, for the sixth straight tournament game, didn’t trail for a single second and advanced to meet either No. 2 Deering or No. 3 Cheverus in Saturday’s regional final.
The Lions (20-0) shot to a 10-4 lead after one period and pushed it to 26-12 at halftime. No. 4 Scarborough, to its credit, rallied back within seven in the third period, but McAuley went on to slam the door.
The Lions were paced by 13 points from junior Jackie Welch. Junior Olivia Smith added 10 points and nine rebounds. McAuley had a 34-22 advantage on the glass.
The Red Storm (16-4) got 10 points from senior Mary Redmond.
