LEWISTON— An accident at Chestnut and Canal streets sent three people to the hospital shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday.

A blue 2001 Ford Expedition SUV driven by Donna Auger, 65, of Lisbon was southbound on Canal Street when it collided with a silver 2003 Chrysler Town and Country minivan westbound on Chestnut Street, driven by Abdi Aden Yakub, 44.

A witness to the accident, Walter Cyr of Sabattus, was following the SUV when the accident occurred.

“She was proceeding through the intersection and the van just came and hit her right dead center,” he said.

Air bags deployed in both vehicles. Both were towed due to disabling damage.

Yakub and his passenger were both strapped to backboards and wheeled to waiting ambulances.

Auger and Yakub complained of chest pain.
