WINTERPORT, Maine — An 18-year-old from Winterport was arrested last week after confessing to sexually assaulting an 8-year-old boy, according to police.
Thomas Emery was charged on Feb. 13 in Bangor with three counts of gross sexual assault, which allegedly occurred last November and December, according to a report from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.
Detective Jason Bosco said Tuesday that the child told someone at his school that the sexual assaults had happened, and school officials referred the matter to police. Bosco said he interviewed the child and then spoke to Emery, who confessed to the crimes.
“Hopefully that will prevent the victim from having to testify later on,” Bosco said.
Emery was taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast, where he was booked and later released on $200 cash bail.
The Winterport man has no criminal history, Bosco said. He was a friend of the victim’s family.
Gross sexual assault is a Class A crime. If convicted, Emery faces as much as 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.
He is scheduled to appear at Waldo County Superior Court in Belfast for his arraignment March 28.
