South Portland police searching for 3 suspects in armed robbery of pizza delivery man

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A local pizza delivery man was robbed at gunpoint Saturday night as he tried to deliver a hot pie to the Olde English Village Apartments, and police are now searching for three suspects, South Portland police Detective Chris Todd said Monday.

“We’ve been working leads all morning,” the detective said.

The delivery driver was not injured in the robbery, but he was shaken and “pretty upset,” Todd said.

The armed robbery, which carries a penalty of up to 30 years in prison for those convicted of the felony crime, was reported just before 10 p.m. Saturday at the apartment complex located at 499 Westbrook St.

“A gentleman met [the driver] out front and claimed to be the customer who called,” Todd said. “While speaking with him, two other black males came around the corner and threatened the delivery driver — one had a gun and one had a knife.

“One had a red bandana covering his face and the other one had a gray bandana covering his face,” the detective said. “They made off with a small amount of cash and the pizza.”

The two armed robbery suspects took off on foot heading toward Westbrook Street and the “‘customer’ was right behind them,” the detective said.

Police believe the man who called for the pizza was involved in the felony robbery and are searching for him along with the other two armed men.
They have his phone number and are working to track him down with it, Todd said. The pizza shop was not identified for investigative reasons, he said.

Police also are looking through video surveillance images from cameras in the neighborhood, the detective said.

“There are some in the area and we are checking those,” Todd said.

The “customer” is described as a 5-foot, 5-inch dark-skinned black male who is around 20 years old with “very crooked” front teeth.

The two armed suspects are both described as in their early 20s, between 5 feet, 6 inches and 5 feet, 7 inches tall with thin builds, and both were wearing black, hooded sweatshirts.

Those with information about the robbery investigation are asked to call Detective Steven Connors at 799-5511, ext. 7217.
