SEARSPORT, Maine — A Belfast man was in critical condition Monday morning after suffering multiple injuries in a two-vehicle head-on collision early Sunday morning.

Joseph Wyman, 36, was a passenger in a 2011 Ford pickup truck driven by Stephenie Mehuren, 25, of Belfast. They were headed south on U.S. Route 1 at about 5 a.m. when the truck went out of control near the entrance to Moose Point State Park, according to police reports.

“It was snowing and blowing. The roads were snow covered, and very slippery,” Searsport Police Chief Dick LaHaye said Monday.

At the same time as the truck began to go out of control, another pickup truck — driven by Daniel Black, 48, of Belfast — was heading north on the same road.

“As they approached, Black realized that the white pickup truck was out of control and actually sliding toward him in his lane,” LaHaye said.

Mehuren said after the accident that her vehicle began to fishtail and she realized she was in the opposite lane and driving sideways.

“Both operators advised that they were trying to steer away from the other vehicle,” LaHaye said.

But the two trucks collided, injuring all three people involved and totaling both vehicles.

Black, who was driving a 2004 GMC, suffered contusions and abrasions. He was taken to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast by Searsport Ambulance. Mehuren was taken to the same hospital by Belfast Ambulance complaining of abrasions and pain. She was treated and released, LaHaye said.

Wyman initially was taken to the Belfast hospital by Searsport Ambulance, but from there he was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor by Belfast Ambulance. He suffered from a head injury, a broken pelvis, a broken right ankle, broken ribs and abrasions.

LaHaye said that Wyman was being operated on Monday morning.

The accident continues to be under investigation, the chief said.
