Top-ranked Falmouth boys roll past Maranacook

By Michael Hoffer, The Forecaster

PORTLAND—Earlier Saturday afternoon, the top-ranked Falmouth boys’ basketball team sat and watched as the team it’s most associated with, No. 2 York, completely dismantled No. 7 Greely in its Western Class B quarterfinal.

The Yachtsmen then went out and said, “Anything you can do, we can do better,” in a romp over No. 8 Maranacook at the Portland Exposition Building.

Falmouth’s balance, depth, size, length and ability to do special things on both ends of the floor were on display from the get-go as the Yachtsmen scored the game’s first five points and never looked back en route to a 58-30 victory.

Falmouth (now 18-1) will meet fourth-ranked Mountain Valley (13-6, after its quarterfinal round win over No. 5 Spruce Mountain) in the semifinals Thursday at 9 p.m., at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Senior Charlie Fay had had eight first quarter points as the Yachtsmen opened up a 13-4 lead. A driving layup from senior Grant Burfeind, an old-fashioned three-play from senior Tom Wilberg and a Fay putback made it 20-4. Maranacook, paced by standout 6-foot-8 senior Kyle Boucher, rallied back within 10 late in the half, but a 3-ball from Burfeind gave Falmouth a commanding 29-16 advantage at the break.

When the Yachtsmen opened the second half on a 12-4 run, capped by a thunderous putback dunk from Fay, it was all but finished. Falmouth led by as many as 30 in the fourth quarter.

Fay had a team-high 15 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots. Burfeind added 13 points, freshman Thomas Coyne had 12 and Wilberg finished with 11. The Yachtsmen forced 21 turnovers and had a 38-28 rebounding advantage.

Maranacook (9-11) was paced by Boucher’s 16 points, 11 boards and three blocks.
