Portland firefighters prepare to head to Peaks Island to battle a Seashore Avenue blaze on Saturday afternoon.

PEAKS ISLAND, Maine — Portland firefighters worked against the elements Saturday afternoon to extinguish a fire on Seashore Avenue on Peaks Island.

Portland spokeswoman Nicole Clegg said the fire was reported at 3:30 p.m., as 31 inches of snow fell on the city.

Portland firefighters had to take a ferry across Casco Bay to get to the scene, Clegg said Monday morning.

The single occupant of the house escaped unharmed thanks to working smoke detectors, Clegg said. The fire, which was started by a wood stove, caused minor damage to the home.
