BANGOR, Maine — A West Enfield man went into Walmart on Sunday and after filling his cart with electronics and grabbing a can of soda, he attempted to leave without paying, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday.

Scott D. Ireland, 42, was arrested and charged with theft at about 12:05 p.m. after he was caught by store security with nearly $686 in stolen items, the sergeant said.

Ireland’s cart had a desktop computer, plasma TV, digital camera, tools, car equipment and a can of Mountain Dew, Edwards said.

Ireland was previously convicted of theft and in January 2011 was sentenced to 120 days in jail and ordered to pay $2,100 in restitution. In September 2011 he was sentenced for another theft and ordered to spend 48 hours in jail and pay a $500 fine, according to prior court listings printed in the Bangor Daily News. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail after his Sunday arrest and remained there on Monday afternoon, Edwards said.
