BANGOR — The Oriental Jade Restaurant announced that it will celebrate Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake Feb. 10-17, by hosting a traveling photography exhibit, “China: Exploring the Interior, 1903-1904.” The week also will include cultural and arts festivities.

The exhibit was produced in association with the Chinese Room of the Newport Public Library in Rhode Island and the Maine Humanities Council.

In 1903, R. Harvey Sargent, a native of Sedgwick and a topographer with the U.S. Geological Survey, joined a Carnegie Institution expedition that took him 1,800 miles across the interior of China. Along the way, Sargent documented his observations with photographs of the land and the peasants from which the Chinese Revolution was to come. The exhibit consists of 74 original photographs, which have been enlarged and reproduced to museum standards. Oriental Jade will have nearly 50 of the photos on display.

The Year of the Snake celebration will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10  with an opening reception. The explorer’s grandson, Robert M. Sargent, who helped organize the exhibit, will speak about Harvey Sargent’s life and times.

During the opening reception and New Year week, Oriental Jade patrons will enjoy authentic Chinese New Year foods, including fish, jai, chicken, noodles, dumplings, fruit, Niango and New Year’s cakes.

Many free, family-oriented festivities will be held throughout the week, including the traditional Lion Dance with drums, various cultural activities and a Welcome New Year Fireworks at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb 10.

In addition to the festivities, a selection of Asian-inspired florals and Bonsai trees will be on display Feb. 10-17.

The photography exhibit will be on display at the Maine Discovery Museum Feb. 20 through March 3. An opening reception will be held 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the museum.
