PROSPECT, Maine — The body of a Bangor man who has been missing since the beginning of October was found Thursday morning on the shore of the Penobscot River.

People walking by the river found the body of Shawn Joseph Flewelling, 38, who police last year said appeared to have fallen “off the face of the Earth,” according to Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

“The circumstances weren’t suspicious,” Trafton said Friday afternoon.

Police contacted Flewelling’s next of kin before releasing information to the media.

Last fall, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Flewelling “vanished into thin air,” on Oct. 4.

His family members and friends could offer few clues as to what might have happened and where the missing man might have gone, Edwards said. Flewelling, who lived on Curve Street, was reported missing on Oct. 24 by family members who had last seen him 20 days earlier. Police reached out to the media in November, seeking the public’s help in finding the missing man.

Police said then that there was no indication that foul play was involved and that Flewelling had no apparent reasons to have left the state without notifying anyone.

Waldo County police officials found Flewelling’s wallet with the body and contacted the Bangor Police Department Thursday. His body was taken to a funeral home.
