DEER ISLE, Maine — For one Bangor woman, there’s no such thing as a free ride.

Tarra Norton, 29, was issued a summons Thursday morning in Deer Isle with theft of services after allegedly skipping out on a cab fare for about $150.

Norton allegedly took a cab from Bangor to Sunset Road in Deer Isle early Wednesday, Jan. 23. She told the Bangor cab driver that her friend would pay, according to Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Rob Morang, and went into an apartment, allegedly to get the money. She never returned.

“The cab driver waited for a little while, then he called us,” Morang said Friday morning.

Before Norton was identified, the Ellsworth Police Department — which regularly uses Facebook to seek the public’s help in identifying suspects — posted a security image of Norton from a Bangor convenience store on the sheriff’s office’s behalf.

Morang said Norton was identified by other means, but said it’s always nice to have the public’s help in closing a case.

“Even though that wasn’t what identified her, I’m appreciative of everyone trying to help,” he said.

Theft of services is a Class E crime, or misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
