MANCHESTER, Maine — Speed and alcohol were factors in an early-morning crash that left a Wilton man dead and a Chesterville man in the hospital Wednesday, police said.
Joshua Lavine, 31, and his passenger, William Decastro, 62, were traveling on Granite Hill Road when Lavine’s speeding car struck a large rock, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
Neither man was wearing a seat belt, and the impact sent the car into the air and it struck several trees 20 feet off the ground, according to McCausland.
Lavine was pronounced dead at the scene while Decastro was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment. He is expected to survive.
The crash was reported shortly after midnight, McCausland said. Lavine’s driver’s license had been suspended multiple times for violations including operating after suspension and failure to pay fines.
