BUCKFIELD, Maine — A 17-year-old boy from Sumner suffered a concussion and lacerations after his 2006 Saturn Ion left Route 117 at around 5 p.m. Monday. A 3-month-old infant in the backseat was unharmed.
According to Deputy Nathan Bowie of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department, the car apparently hit a patch of ice.
Bowie said wind conditions around Streaked Mountain makes the area freeze before other surfaces.
“There were no skid marks” Bowie said, saying the driver had little time to react.
“He missed the first tree but got the second one,” Bowie said, crediting the deployment of the air bag and child restraint system with saving the occupants from serious injuries.
