Ellsworth man who went missing gets jailed

By Bill Trotter, BDN Staff

ELLSWORTH, Maine — A local man reported missing from the Ellsworth area for more than a week after Christmas was arrested Thursday, according to police.

Jonathan Spinney, 28, was wanted on a warrant out of Hancock County drug court, according to the Ellsworth Police Department. Spinney came to the police department offices at City Hall and turned himself in at around 4 p.m. Thursday, Officer Kelvin Mote said Friday.

An officer at Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth said Friday evening that Spinney remains in custody at the jail, where he is being held without bail until he makes an appearance before a judge.

Spinney had been living recently at the Sister Barbara Hance House in Ellsworth, a home for the long-term homeless. According to Ellsworth Police Chief John DeLeo, Spinney has a history of drug abuse. Before he went missing on Christmas Eve, Spinney had last been seen at an ex-girlfriend’s house on Ohio Street in Bangor, police have said.

According to Ellsworth police Detective Dotty Small, Spinney called his mother on Wednesday morning and, as a result, was no longer considered missing.
