PATTEN – Janet Lee Alward Desmond, forever 39, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012. She was born May 19 in Cambridge, Mass., to Lee and Thelma (Pihl) Alward.
Moving to Maine as a young girl, Janet grew up in Portage and was a 1955 graduate of Patten Academy. She worked for nine years at the Patten Head Start Program, then worked until disabled at Ken and Jeff’s Store, Patten. Janet was a dedicated member of Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, even after her illnesses kept her from attending services. Janet enjoyed reading, going for rides to see the scenery and mostly spending time with her family and friends. Janet also had a love for animals, especially her cat, Gracie.
Janet is survived by her children, Michael Desmond, Lee Ann and husband, Charlie Hurlbert, Gina Desmond and Berry Grant, all of Patten; younger sister, Ellen Alward Dickinson of Patten; grandchildren, David and Kelley (Ridenour) Gazaway of Del City, Okla., Kristin (Gazaway) and Leslie Lane of Sherman, Karley Desmond and Justin Baca of Camillus, N.Y., Dustin Grant, Sarah Harris and Amy Grant, all of Patten; great-grandchildren, Dalton, Shelby, David Lee Gazaway and Julia Pershica, all of Del City, Okla., Taylor, Tanner and Alexis Lane of Sherman, and Simon Baca of Camillus, N.Y.; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends. She was predeceased by her grandson, Lee Michael Desmond; father of her children, Dale Desmond; and brother-in-law, David Dickinson. The family thanks all of those who helped in the care of Janet during her illness: the intensive care unit and long term care staff at Houlton Regional Hospital, Dr. Aboulesh M.D., David Pellin, P.A., the patient care assistants that took such great care of Janet when she was home, along with all her wonderful neighbors.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, Patten, with the Rev. David Dyrenforth officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, Patten Library or Houlton Humane Society.
