Police confirm identity of man found dead in van in hospital parking lot

BANGOR, Maine — Police have identified a man who was found dead in a van outside a local hospital earlier this week.

Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards confirmed the deceased man is Joseph Ward, 35, of Bangor, according to a news release on Wednesday afternoon.

A security guard at St. Joseph Hospital had found a van idling in the facility’s parking lot just after 1 a.m. Sunday, with Ward unconscious in the back seat.

Even though rescue crews smashed out the windows to get to him, Ward already was deceased.

Edwards did not disclose a cause of death, as police are investigating that aspect while awaiting results from toxicology reports.

Edwards had said drug-related paraphernalia had been found in the van.
