Missing hunter from Pennsylvania found dead in Washington County

By Tom Walsh, BDN Staff

AUGUSTA, Maine — The body of Eugene Koehler, 73, a deer hunter from Pennsylvania, was discovered early Thursday morning near the hunting camp at which he was staying in Washington County’s Township 42.

Doug Rafferty, a spokesman for the Maine Warden Service, said Thursday afternoon that Koehler died of natural causes. “He apparently had quite a bit of medical issues,” Rafferty said.

The search for Koehler began Wednesday afternoon after those who shared a hunting camp with him reported him missing at about 7 p.m., Rafferty said.

“We brought in wardens and K-9s and the Sunshine County Search and Rescue team,” he said. “When they were just gathering this morning near the camp, Warden Dan Scott spotted a bit of orange in the woods, about 60 or 70 yards from the camp, a place where no one had looked.”

Rafferty said Koehler had been hunting in Washington County for many years.

Township 42 is in northwestern Washington County and abuts Hancock County’s Township 41.
