From 11:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11th, Schooner’s Seafood & Steakhouse at 5 South Main St., Brewer will offer veterans a free meal from the select Veterans Day menu. This offer is available to active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve military personnel and retired veterans.
The select menu will be available at regular prices to family members, who are also invited to attend. The menu will feature entree choices like carved turkey, stuffed pork roulade, vegetarian lasagna, and a Maine shepherd’s pie. Veterans may also select a free dessert like apple crisp or bread pudding.
Schooner’s has a long-standing tradition of hosting a Veterans Day dinner, and this year will be no different. Proprietors Mike and Sharine Kessock “are proud to host dinner for the men and women that have served in the military, as they are truly the backbone of this country.”
Mike Kessock said that “I come from a patriotic, military family.” His father served in the Air Force for 26 years and was stationed at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor.
After graduating from the University of Maine in 1966, Kessock served as a Navy pilot for six years. “It was a tough six years. but in many ways it was the best six years of my life. The guys in my squadron were the greatest bunch of guys,” remembered Kessock. Of the 65 people in his graduating class, 61 went to Vietnam. He did not.
When asked about the homecoming that Vietnam-era servicemen and -women received, Kessock said, “It was a different time, and homecoming was quite a bit different back then. I know how these men and women feel as they return home, and I have the highest respect for troop greeters who welcome them back.”
Kessock wants to thank veterans for their service, and the tradition of offering a free meal to veterans is the restaurant’s way of expressing that thanks.
