Early morning accident on icy road claims 23-year-old New Sweden man

CARIBOU, Maine — An early morning two-vehicle accident on Van Buren Road has claimed the life of a New Sweden man.

Matthew Turnbull, 23, of New Sweden was traveling south just before 6 a.m. Thursday in a 2000 GMC Sierra when he collided with a northbound 2004 Ford Explorer driven by Edmond St. Pierre, 48, of Caribou, according to information released by Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan.

Both drivers were transported by ambulance to Cary Medical Center where Turnbull was pronounced dead, Gahagan said in the release.

St. Pierre was treated for his injuries at the hospital and his condition is unknown.

Road conditions at the time of the accident were described by Gahagan as icy and unsanded and the accident remains under investigation by Matthew Cummings of the Caribou Police Department assisted by officer Jason Matheson.

Also assisting at the accident were members of the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department and the Maine Warden Service.
