Comments for: Dedham man arrested after six-hour standoff

Guidelines for posting on bangordailynews.com

The Bangor Daily News and the Bangor Publishing Co. encourage comments about stories, but you must follow our terms of service.

  1. Keep it civil and stay on topic
  2. No vulgarity, racial slurs, name-calling or personal attacks.
  3. People who harass others or joke about tragedies will be blocked.
The primary rule here is pretty simple: Treat others with the same respect you'd want for yourself. Here are some guidelines (see more):

  • Jim was a good kid back 32 years ago when I knew him,  but he was treated like trash by everyone.

Treat people like garbage, and this is what you get.

Not saying he has no responsibility here. He’s 46, and it is his life, and his choice to do what he did.    BUT it is easier to behave in this fashion when you learn this behavior young.

I wonder why he was treating like trash by Everyone, hmmmmmm

      • Anonymous

Some times, people get treated badly, when they don’t deserve it. I know as one who came from the wrong side of town.

What came first,The Chicken or The Egg ?

          • You Sir have no clue people who look or talk different are sometimes treated bad . As one who was treated like a slow learner and bullied a lot my lucky break was going to a different school where no one new me . Ending up with graduating honors .  Just saying some are singled out by no fault of there own . Been there myself .

          • Anonymous

First off, I believe you.  That said, if you got honors, it wasn’t for spelling or grammar.

          • Right . Probably do to an auditory processing problem .

Bobby, what does your comments about being good in math, have to do about a man that assulted his fiance????

          • Nothing with a man assaulting his fiance ..

          • Anonymous

hmmm ok well do we even know the for sure he assulated her? The facts arent even out yet………..

          • I do not think we know . Just going by what the paper says .

          • Anonymous

Yes, I agree.  How’s that saying go?…”It’s not what happens to you that is important.  It is how you handle it that is important.”  Or, the way I originally heard it: “It’s not what happens to you: it’s what you do with it.”

Maybe typing is a daunting thing for Bobby, especially when making  an emotional point.

            So you have ESP too,congrats

I don’t remember Jim being bullied or being treated like trash, at least in high school, and believe me, we were a very tight knit group.

      • He wasn’t in high school yet when I knew him. You can believe it or not, but I probably knew him better than you… or his tight-knit friends.

        • Anonymous

          You sure ’bout that?  :)

I knew Jim in high school and he was not bullied by any maens. He ran
with the popular crowd and came from a very well to do family.

It seems that at least once a week, there is an armed standoff somewhere in Maine. What’s up with that?

    • Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota.  pick a State.

Could be the economy, drugs, end-of-Empire syndrom.  pick a malady.

Maybve it is just because there are too many people, and no place far enough away to run to.

This difficult financial economy we are in, especially in some parts of Maine, is creating additional stresses on individuals and families.Sometimes these standoffs are a cry for help. This may be  a more impulsive and emotional, as well as situational, response to  some of the stressors.

From some of the comments from those who know the man, this is entirely out of character. I really hope these commentors will reach out to him as he may be too embarrassed to reach out to you. I hope this man and his girlfriend will both be OK, mentally and physically, after this event. Good Luck, Mr. Garland.

No woman (or man) deserves to be assaulted, but there are two sides to every story. I don’t know what other factors contributed to this scenario, but knowing (sort of) someone who once did this, that was a move of desperation. It was like the suicide cry for help. I am really glad no one was hurt seriously here and I hope all parties get the help they need to move on from this. I hope Mr. Garland gets a fair shake from the justice system.

I’ve known Jim for decades.  He’s a great guy, comes from an awesome family, is intelligent, and if memory serves me right, he wasn’t treated like trash in high school.   He was, and still is, well liked, and had, and still does have, lots of friends, and quite a few of those old friends are still pretty close to him and think the best of him.  I know I do, even if right now I am in a state of shock and saddened by what’s happened.  There’s no excuse for domestic violence or threatening someone,  but  if you ask anyone who knows him, they will tell you this isn’t like him at all.  He’s a happy go lucky, caring person.  I’m grateful that no one was hurt and thank God he didn’t hurt himself, and hope if Jim has fallen on desperate times that he gets the help he needs.  I know there will be many of us who will stand behind him and his family, no matter how this plays out.

You are truly that friend in need right now. I hope he reaches out for your support.

    • Anonymous

Maybe he’s been hanging around with some other people in Dedham that aren’t nice at all and been taking ‘how to be hateful lessons’ without realizing it?

  • Anonymous

Maybe in some cases, but not this one.

    • Anonymous

      even worse,then

  • Not this man. Very smart. A tad narcissistic as a lad, but aren’t we all as teenagers?

  • Yes, Jimmy, your friends are here for you…

  • Randall Flagg

yet another stand off…i’m against banning gun ownership but there should be more (if the gun was bought legally) in depth security protocols.

  • and_then

I know this man, I worked with this man and he has had lives entrusted to him more than once and did the job with no problem.  Whatever is going on, it’s not typical behavior for Jim. I hope that no matter what has happened in his life, he knows that people care for him and that he can overcome his problems and get his life back.
There is never any excuse for domestic violence, but I will wait to hear all the facts. There is no need for a rush to judgement now that everyone is safe.

The comments should have been closed after fluffyspuns. Well said, its clear you know Jim well. I second everything you said.  Reading comments about people you don’t know is one thing, when it is someone you call a friend its a different ball game. You quickly realize most of the comments here are insensitve, thoughtless, and way off base.

It seems there’s one of these stories every week now. I hope families can get whatever help they need to prevent another person resorting to this dangerous behavior.

  • Anonymous

Why was there a standoff again..
The incident is based on one persons story..
Hey Police my neighbors own guns..  awaiting the swat team!!!!!!!!

  • Randall Flagg

he has the right to be an attorney

  • JohnR

Could have been worse……………We have got to admit it sometime in the near future that some people just should not be able to access or own guns. I don’t know what we can do, but it’s stuff like this that starts politicians on the road to eroding our right to own guns for self protection for target shooting and for hunting.

I know this crime has to do with a gun and the guy obviously just snapped and gets no bail.  But yet child molesters and people who download kiddie porn have only $500 bail…..only in Maine!

I honestly dont get what happened Jimmy is my cousin…Love him to pieces he is a good loving guy with a heart of gold and is the life of the party….as I said below something had to have happened to set him off in such a way…now the most evil of drugs in my eyes out there is alcohal…and its legal…WOW how many issues like these happen where no alkie is involved …not many…there is so much domestic violence when an argument gets going if uve been drinking….I am pretty sure there is MUCH more to the story than any of us know and 2 sides….noone should say anything too rude till they know the facys ..but it is human nature to jump and carry on with the bad and put a person down b4 finding out the facts and why to make themselves feel better….Well Jimmy if your reading this I hope u see the people who do know you and do love you will defend you….Hang tough and this will all work out and remember I love ya Cuz….
