BREMEN, Maine — Police believe that a homeowner perished early Saturday morning in a fire that flattened a small home in Bremen.
Steven Sidelinger, 56, lived alone in the Turner Road house and has not been located, according to a news release issued Saturday afternoon by the Maine Department of Public Safety.
“Fire investigators suspect the body may be his,” the press release stated.
The body was found in the rubble of the house and has been taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta for autopsy and identification.
Firefighters learned of the blaze just before 3 a.m. and found that the house was already destroyed when they arrived at the scene. The house was once a seasonal camp that had been converted into a year-round residence, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
Three fire marshal investigators responded to the scene, but believe that it is unlikely the cause of the fire will be determined because of the extent of the destruction of the home, the news release said.
