I feel there is a connection between these bonds and the skyrocketing cost of  UMS faculties and administrators; and a lessening of the overall productivity of the faculty; but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

One can glory in new edifices….Orono and Portland are covered in them, large vast often empty spaces, build in hopes of housing this or that glitzy research program. Who can criticize the combination of two animal, plant and insect specimen diagnostic facilities into one laboratory that has quarantine capability.

The laboratory would continue to test for health threats such as avian influenza, Lyme disease and salmonella. The facility is necessary in order to continue protecting Maine people, animals and crops.

Unfortunately, these is may not be in synch with the vigilance of the CDC or other large labs. Duplication?? Did the CDC endorse this bond issue or is there some Federal money promised to fund this and then we get stuck with yet another empty research lab.

There are secure buildings at Brunswick’s naval air station, including a health complex with labs. Why not convert them, instead of pumping more money into Orono?
