The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Portland Mayor Michael Brennan and members of the Maine city’s Sudanese community are getting a visit from the vice president of South Sudan, Riek Machar.

Saturday morning’s meeting will be an opportunity for the mayor to discuss the contributions the Sudanese community has made to Portland and links that have been formed between the city and the newly independent Republic of South Sudan.

Following the meeting, city officials and members of the city’s South Sudanese community will host a town hall meeting at the Portland High School Auditorium with the vice president. Members of the community will be able to discuss the future of the eastern African country and ask Machar questions.

Portland has become home to refugees from the war in Sudan.
