Dole recalls salad over possible listeria contamination

By Becky Yerak, Chicago Tribune

Dole Fresh Vegetables said Wednesday that it’s voluntarily recalling a “limited number” of cases of American Blend salads in Illinois and nine other states because of a possible health risk from listeria monocytogenes.

Dole said that it’s working with regulators and that no illnesses have been reported related to the recall.

The other states in the recall are: Indiana, Maine, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Listeria symptoms include fever, muscle aches, nausea or diarrhea. Pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems should be particularly careful; most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill, the Monterey, Calif.-based company said.

Dole cited an isolated instance in which a sample of American Blend salad tested positive for listeria in a random test by Tennessee’s agriculture department.

The salads are in 12-ounce bags, coded A275208A or B, with a use-by date of Oct. 17 and UPC 7143000933. The product code and use-by date are in the upper right-hand corner of the package; the UPC code is on the back of the package, below the barcode.

Retailers and consumers with questions can call Dole at 800-356-3111.
