BANGOR, Maine — Bangor High School STEM program students launched a weather balloon from the school’s soccer field Thursday morning.

The STEM program science students launched the balloon with the help of Dr. Rick Eason of the University of Maine, his assistants and Bangor High School science teachers Ted Taylor and Cary James.

The balloon is expected to loft 100,000 feet — to the edge of the atmosphere — at which point it is expected to burst and fall back to earth.

The students and their teachers expect to retrieve the payload with sensors.
