Connecticut man drowns in Crescent Lake

RAYMOND, Maine — The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the Thursday morning drowning death of William Prouty, 87, of New Hartford, Conn., in Crescent Lake.

Prouty was found floating in the Crescent Lake waters near his camp at approximately 9:25 a.m. by his wife. The Proutys own a seasonal property on a small island in the lake.

Prouty left to go meet a maintenance worker on the mainland and, after not returning, he was found by his wife in the water near their dock. Prouty was recovered from the lake and pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause and manner of his death will be determined by the office of the chief medical examiner, but the circumstances surrounding it are not considered suspicious.
