UMaine field hockey team drops its first two games to MSU, BC

ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine field hockey team managed just two goals in two games and was swept in its opening weekend, 3-1 to Michigan State on Sunday and 4-1 by Boston College on Saturday.

Abby Barker scored two goals for 1-1 Michigan State after Allie Ahern gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead 21:24 into the contest.

Maine got on the board at the 57:58 mark when Cassidy Svetek scored her first career goal. Fellow freshman Nicole Sevey started the play for Maine as she slid a pass from the right side to Svetek. Svetek then maneuvered her way around the defense and through the circle, sliding a shot past Michigan State goalkeeper Molly Cassidy.

After the Black Bear goal, Michigan State pulled its offense back and played a more defense-oriented game to secure the victory.

Sydney Kolysher took the loss for Maine with five saves and MSU’s Cassidy had four.

Michigan State outshot the Black Bears 13-8 while each team attempted six penalty corners.

On Saturday, Boston College began the scoring 9:51 into the contest when Virgynia Muma tapped in a rebound to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage. Emma Plasteras extended the BC lead to 2-0 on a goal off a set corner play.

The Black Bears got on the board at the 60:04 mark when Jessica Skillings tipped home her first career goal. Annabelle Hamilton carried the ball to the top of the circle before unleashing a shot toward the cage. Skillings, in perfect position, was able to get her stick on the ball and redirect the shot past the Eagle goalkeeper.

Six minutes later, Abby Bascetta added a penalty-shot goal which gave the Eagles a 4-1 lead.

BC, now 2-0, outshot Maine 12-5 and had a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners. BC’s Leah Settipane had three saves while Maine’s Kolysher had four and Alicia Frisch had one.
