WISCASSET, Maine — The Morris Farm announced that the 14th annual Tour de Farms Bike Ride and Local Foods Barbecue will be held rain or shine on Sunday, Aug. 19. Riders may choose 20-, 50- or 100-mile rides through the midcoast and farmlands. All rides start and end at the Morris Farm Trust in Wiscasset. Rest stops along the way will be stocked with snacks, sports drinks and water. Several rest stops are located at local organic farms, which will set up special farm stands for riders. Farm stand purchases will be transported back to the Morris Farm by volunteers and returned to riders at the barbecue.
The Tour de Farms raises funds to support the Morris Farm Trust, a nonprofit educational farm that promotes sustainable agriculture and stewardship of the earth. The Morris Farm offers multiple programs that seek to connect children and families with the source of their food, including the Morris Farm Wiscasset Primary School Garden Farm-to-School Project; Backyard Farmer, an adult education series that emphasizes sustainable living practices; Farm Camp, an agricultural and ecological based day camp for children; and a new Nutrition Through Gardening program with families from the Wiscasset Head Start preschool program.
Online registration for the Tour de Farms is at morrisfarm.org. Check the website for ride departure times. There is a $10 fee for day or ride registration. Additional barbecue tickets may be purchased for friends not riding.
