PORTLAND, Maine — Democrat Cynthia Dill says she’ll get to work on repealing the federal Defense of Marriage Act on “day one” if she’s elected to the U.S. Senate.

Dill held a rally Wednesday outside City Hall to praise the Democratic Party’s decision to include marriage equality in its draft national platform, saying the party “stands for civil rights.”

The Maine Republican Party responded by saying Mainers are more concerned about jobs.

In the Senate race, independents Angus King, Steve Woods and Andrew Ian Dodge support gay marriage, while Danny Dalton said he believes civil unions are an appropriate solution. Republican Charlie Summers believes marriage is between a man and a woman.

Mainers rejected a gay marriage law approved by the Legislature in 2009. It’s on the ballot again following a referendum drive.
