WILTON, Maine — Police have charged a Massachusetts man in connection with a July 4 home invasion and assault on Birch Street that sent a young woman to the hospital.

Devon Barrows, 18, West Bridgewater, Mass., was arrested Saturday on charges of aggravated criminal trespass and assault.

Police searched for Barrows after an 18-year-old victim first told police an unknown young man and woman entered her home at about 10 p.m. on July 4 and assaulted her during a confrontation but then recanted and gave police the name of the male assailant.

The victim said the suspects left the home while she was in a bedroom being protected by the family dog, who bit the man on his right shin.

She was taken by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital, treated for minor injuries and released.

Five days later, she recanted her story and told police that she did know the assailants or at least the young man.

Police made a warrant for his arrest but he had been out of state. Wilton police Officer Mike Ryan spotted Barrows in town and the arrest was made.

The young woman who reportedly entered the home with Barrows has yet to be identified, according to Wilton police.

Barrows remained at Franklin County Detention Center Monday. Bail has been set at $500 but a pretrial contract is under consideration, according to an officer at the detention center.
